Under the Bed

Todd’s mother flicked the light switch off and pulled the door shut behind her leaving it open a crack. Todd turned in his bed to face the window and looked up at the hazy clouds passing over the crescent moon. With 4th grade starting soon, Todd has been having trouble getting to sleep because of his excitement for school. He often gave up on trying to sleep and played his Game Boy underneath the covers in bed. Lately though, Todd has had something else keeping him awake the past few nights.

Just as Todd was starting to doze off, a raspy deep voice called his name. It whispered throughout his room like a cold breeze through a dead forest. “Todd.. Todd.. Are you awake?” Todd turned in his bed trying to ignore the voice as he pulled the covers over his head. “Todd, come on just take a peek under the bed.”

“Why won’t you leave me alone?” Todd whispered back.

“I’ll leave you alone if you look under the bed. I just want to talk.”

“Todd I won’t bug you ever again if you-”

Footsteps creaked up the stairs and down the hall towards Todd’s bedroom. The door pushed open and the light flicked back on.

“Honey, there isn’t anything in here,” She sighed.

“Mom please. There really is a voice, it’s under the bed.”

Todd’s mother knelt down and looked under the bed frame. “Nothing’s there, here come look.”

Todd hung his head upside down off the edge of the bed, and just as she had said, nothing was there.

“Please try to get to sleep Todd, it’s just your imagination.” Todd’s mother stood back up and flicked the light switch back off. “Goodnight,” she whispered as she left the bedroom.

Todd pulled the covers back over his head and welded his eyes shut. “Todd I’ve already told you I can turn invisible whenever I want. You’re the only one who can see and hear me.”

“What do you want?”

“I told you, I just want you to look at me. Look under the bed Todd.”

“Why? Why do you want me to see you.”

“I actually need your help,” the raspy voice said.

“With what?”

“That’s why I need you to look. I have to show you. Just take a quick peek”

“Fine.” Todd threw his blanket off his head. He peeked off the side of the bed as if he were looking off the edge of a cliff. He clenched his eyes shut and hung his head off the side of the bed, hanging his head upside down.

“You can’t see with your eyes closed Todd. Open your eyes.”

Todd opened his eyes and let out a scream. The scream resounded throughout the house and Todd’s mother sprinted up the stairs. She pushed the door open and sitting there on the bed, in the dark was Todd with pure white eyes.

“Todd?” She asked.

“Hello mother,” he said in a deep raspy voice.
